Mother of Light

Oral history interview with Asbjorn Eide by Barbara Wahlberg. Eide suggests that his interest in peace and human rights stems from his childhood experience living in a town bombed by the Germans during their occupation of Norway. As a teenager he explains how he then became actively involved in the Norwegian student anti-apartheid movement and subsequently attended the banquet and march in Oslo when Luthuli received the Nobel Peace Prize. He describes the agreeable impression Luthuli made on him and subjects they discussed during their meeting. Also discussed are Eide’s friendship with Hans Beukes and Luthuli foreseeing such an event as the Soweto uprising.
